Some form of musical communication is a part of every known culture on earth – it is part of what makes us human. Emotions, intentions and meanings can be expressed through music. This is why we believe that music teaching is central to our life at Fleecefield.

Music as a school subject is creative, social, physical and academic. It can provide children with a skill for life, whether in employment directly in the music industry or, more likely, in their leisure time. It promotes teamwork, self-confidence and a sense of achievement.

At Fleecefield, we utilise the Kapow scheme of work to support class teachers in delivering a curriculum that ensures progression in musical skills, as outlined in the National Curriculum. The five dimensions of music in the Kapow scheme are:

•  Listening and Evaluating
• Creating Sound
• Notation
• Improvising and Composing
• Performing – Singing and Playing

Kapow provides highly engaging lessons, giving children the opportunity to listen to a diverse range of music from every continent. Various musical genres are explored, including folk, rock, jazz, baroque, and calypso, encompassing both traditional and contemporary music. The teaching of music terminology is also integrated into the lessons.

In addition to weekly music lessons, the children participate in singing assemblies and have opportunities to perform throughout the year.
